Vaughan Williams's arrangement of this 18th-century English hymn, sometimes referred to as the national anthem of Christendom, is regal and stately. The text is by Edward Perronet (1726-92), a clergyman who worked closely with the Methodists John and Charles Wesley, and the original music by the organist William Shrubsole.
