Kurtág: OP. 27 No. 2 (Double concerto)

Until the late 1980s Kurtág had not tried to compose anything for large-scale orchestra. A commission from the Berlin Festival in 1988 resulted in a work for piano and instrumental groups ...quasi una fantasia..., Op. 27 which can be described as an orchestral work, but with certain reservations. The instruments are not used as an orchestra in the traditional sense, but are arranged in groups and positioned not only on the platform, but in various locations in the auditorium. Its pair-work, a double concerto for Cello, Piano, received as title Op. 27 No. 2, clearly alluding to Beethoven's two 'Sonatas quasi una fantasia'.
