Jean Guillou, geb. am 18. April 1930 in Angers, gehört zu den bedeutenden Organisten der Gegenwart. Er studierte in Paris bei Dupré, Duruflé und Messiaen und wirkte als Professor in Lissabon, Berlin und Zürich. Seine Kompositionen nutzen den ganzen Farbenreichtum der Orgel und behandeln das Instrument mit Virtuosität und einem sensiblen Klanggespür, das seinesgleichen sucht. Internationalen Erfolg hatte er mit seinem Stück Alice im Orgelland (ED 8677) für Orgel und Sprecher, das er in vielen Ländern der Welt spielte, um Kindern und erwachsenen Zuhörern das Wesen der Orgel auf amüsante Weise näher zu bringen. Auf einem seiner internationalen Konzertreisen wurde ihm 1993 in Seoul als Thema einer Improvisation die koreanische Melodie SÄYA gestellt, eine einfache Melodie aus vier Tönen, die mit einem sehr poetischen Text einen blauen Vogel besingt. Ein dankbares, nicht allzu schweres Stück für Unterricht und Konzert. 

Jean Guillou is one of the most eminent organists of our time. His compositions make use of the full range of colours which the organ is capable of producing and handle the instrument with virtuoso skill and sensitivity to tone colour.Guillou achieved international success with his piece ”Alice in Organ land” (ED 8677) for organ and narrator, which he performed in many countries around the world, amusing and entertaining audiences of children and adults while increasing their familiarity with the nature of the instrument.In Seoul on a concert tour in 1993 he was given as a theme for improvisation the Korean melody SÄYA, a simple four-note melody which sings the praises of a ”blue bird” with very poetic words.A rewarding piece that is not too demanding, suitable for concert performance and teaching purposes.
